"My motivation for making an artwork is to realise the history of art in terms of its limitations. I am equally concerned with the human condition and mankind’s attempts at achieving a balance in life. These themes intermingle in my work as I try to transcend their restrictive barriers." Biography: Shin Il Kim is a Korean artist who was born in 1971. Kim produces visual creations that seek to deconstruct our inherent—i.e. “ready-known”—ideas and beliefs through the act of “seeing.” Through such works, he seeks to expose and subvert the complacency of contemporary society, which he feels is a response to the overwhelming inundation of information and non-stop “categorization” of the world. Through his myriad experiments with visual perception—integrating drawings, sculptures, and videos—Kim Shinil conducts experiments on visual perception by crossing over drawing, sculpture and video to broaden our scope of comprehension with realization of the simplified visual language.
Shin Il Kim has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Riccardo Crespi Galleria and at the Queens Museum of Art. There have been many articles about Shin Il Kim, including '10 Exhibitions Opening This Week' written for MutualArt in 2016.
